What is Vastu shastra

Darshanshastra is the starting point for understanding the significance of any of the ancient Indian sciences. The extensively studied discplines like Yogashastra, Jyotishshaastra, Vastushastra, Ayurved, and Sangeet have their origins in Darshanshastra. Rather, these disciplines are known as ‘Upangas’ (sub-branches) of Darshanshastra.

It is interesting to note that all these sub-branches follow a common logical pattern for analyzing and understanding a given situation. Astrology studies the effect of planetary position and direction on an individual, while Vastushastra studies the impact on a Vastu, of cosmic energy and cosmic forces with all their directional aspects. In all these disciplines, a Vastu is assumed to be a living soul having close affinity with the individual dwelling in it.

Life, though beyond logic, is certainly not illogical; Life descends from immensity that is an ocean of logic. But, this immensity itself is infinitely so far away from man’s comprehension that it makes him wonder whether the life itself is beyond logic.

Minute microscopic human thoughts cannot find cosmic link. Holistic existence can create contradictions with logic, the all-purpose source of life. Traditional sciences reflect this fundamental truth through the comprehensive perception of nature. Perception begins where the confines of cause and effect end. Traditional medical disciplines lead to Kaya Kalpa (transformation of body), Yogashashtra results in ManaKalpa (transformation of mind), and Vastushastra shows the way to BhagyaKalpa (transformation of fortunes).

Vastu shastra is science of positive energy and negative energy. we get this energy from light, fire, air, water and earth which are present in our surrounding areas such as our house ,land ,buildings, different structures etc.

Vastu shastra (vāstuśāstra, also vastu veda and vastuvidya, "science of construction", "architecture") is an ancient doctrine which consists of precepts born out of a traditional view on how the laws of nature affect human dwellings. The designs are based ondirectional alignments. It used to be applied in Hindu architecture, especially for Hindu temples, and covers other domains, including vehicles, vessels, furniture, sculpture, paintings, etc. The foundation of Vastu is traditionally ascribed to the mythical sage Mamuni Mayan (Mahaa-muni Maya, a daanava/demon reformed by tapasyaa/austerities) in South and Vishvakarman in North India.

While the fields are related, ShilpaShastra explicitly deal with sculpture – forms, statues, icons, stone murals etc. The doctrine of Vastu Shastra is concerned primarily with architecture – building houses, forts, temples, apartments and other buildings.

The logic and the reasoning behind every guideline of Vastu Shastrais convincing the newer generations to create their houses in accordance to Vastu. Various professionals have thoroughly studied the subject and have found most of its guidelines quite believable.

In ancient times the human habitats were generally constructed according to the rules of Vastu Shastra and people lived happily. In those days the members of a joint family used to be content, prosperous and happy. But, today, despite the families being small, peace and happiness remains a far cry. As times advanced, we started ignoring our old culture and tradition. The rules of Vastu Shastra too were ignored. No wonder the people experienced all kinds of troubles. You will be surprised to note that even today the residents of South India follow the rules of the Vastu shastra and are more peaceful and materialistically and economically more prosperous than North India.

This science, after propounding the rules of construction, goes to prove that by constructing properly our buildings, villages, towns, cities, shops, offices, factories and industries we can make ourselves prosperous.

The Vastu Shastra is founded upon the laws of nature. The equilibrium, significance of it can very well be noted from the movements of motorcars, ships, airoplaines, trains. The Buses are so accurately balanced that even deflation in any one of the tyres, can cause a serious accident if it is running at a high speed. Similarly, when a building is constructed without observing the rules of Vastu Shastra, various calamities, diseases and accidents take place. This is the eternal rule of nature and it has no place for any logic, doubt or debate.

Energy Flow

The directions of East and West are important as far as obtaining the energy from the sun is concerned. The importance of the directions of the North and the South lies in the flow of magnetic waves which flows from North Pole to South Pole.

Importance of Five Elements

Earth

The selection of site for building construction is very important. Besides, congenial environment, greenery and availability of water, we should also see if the land is suitable for building construction.

Water

As far as the flow of domestic water is concerned, it should be borne in mind and that such water has a proper channel from where it should be drained out. Wells, tubewells, swimming pools etc. should all be positioned well. The water from the toilets and bathrooms, the Septic tanks or the flow of sewer-systems in the cities, the flow of rain or fresh water all should be well directed to keep the positive energy and reduce the negative energy.

Fire

The direction of Fire is also very important due to its volatility and shear strength. The Kitchen, fireplace, geysers etc. should be placed only in a particular direction.

Air

The air is the base of life. The ecosystem we live in should have the trigger of life should have a particular flow of direction. All the openings and media for air entry such as doors, windows, ventilators coolers, air-conditioners, verandahs, balconies etc. should be in a particular direction to maximize positive energy in our lives.

Space

The open sky influences greatly. We can get the effect of terrestrial-energies uninterruptedly. But the buildings prove a barrier to the effects of open sky. Therefore, the importance of roofs or lawns gets emphasized, but the Vastu shastra has refrained from deliberating in detail over it, because it is related chiefly to building construction and we will discuss only this aspect. Traditionally every house in India used to have an open space (Court Yard) in the center of the house. It provided the dwellers not only the open sky but also sunlight and cross-ventilation of air. The house can be so constructed to maximize the positive space impact in our lives.
